Wandering around the Summer Fancy Food Show at the Jacob K. Javits Center can be an overwhelming experience. There is just so much food crammed into what seems like a never-ending sea of products. Someone is always trying to grab, clutch or shout their way to your attention. It can make your head spin. Then you quickly begin to realize the emerging trends of the show. (This year had maple water, health food bars and jerky to name a few). But I’m always searching for something different, for a company that is thinking outside the box and has a new product that I haven’t seen executed well. The Splendid Spoon, was one of those companies at this year’s show.
Founder and CEO Nicole Chaszar got her start growing up making soups with vegetables from her mother’s garden. After studying nutrition in college and food preparation at the French Culinary Institute, she reconstituted her old soup-making knowledge. She began using soups as a way to get more vegetables into her diet while also losing weight following the birth of her son. Nicole was looking for a convenient whole food solution that was as close to “home-cooked” as possible. But, she couldn’t find anything that fit the bill. The closest thing she found was premium juice but it still left her hungry and also felt processed since all of the fruit and vegetable fibers were discarded and the juices were then sent through HPP plants. So, like a lot of entrepreneurs, she set out to create her own solution. A soup in an on-the-go bottled format was her fusion of her childhood love of soup, a desire to eat more plant-based foods, and a need for it to be packaged in a more convenient manner. As her soups gained more popularity among her family, friends and co-workers The Splendid Spoon was created as the first commercial soup cleanse in 2013.

All of the soups are high in fiber, low in sugar, and feature at least three servings of vegetables per container. What struck me about her soup was they all tasted extremely fresh and pure. No small feat considering it comes in a bottle. Her product also hit on something I am focused on, finding a healthy but low-in-sugar sugar option (each one of her soups has less than 7g of sugar). The problem with juice cleanses is they are generally high in sugar and low in fiber. The Splendid Spoon is the exact opposite, high in fiber and low in sugar. And here’s the best part about her company: these soups fit everyone’s needs. You don’t have to just be into cleansing; you can also incorporate them as part of a larger meal, as a meal replacement or as a snack.
